How challenges work

Distance you can picture

Two hundred kilometres is an abstraction. Two hundred kilometres of the Camino Francés, with Pamplona behind you and Burgos ahead, is a place on a map. Challenges exist to convert a number that means nothing into progress along something real.

The Camino Virtual runs the full 779 km of the Camino Francés, with the actual waypoints in their actual positions. Everest Haul counts cumulative climb under load to 8,849 m. Fifty-two rucks in fifty-two weeks counts weeks, not kilometres.

How progress is counted

Distance challenges count the distance you walked under load — not the haul, and not steps. A 10 km ruck advances the Camino by 10 km whether you carried 8 kg or 28 kg.

Elevation challenges count ascent recorded on the activity, which means device-recorded rucks contribute and flat manual entries mostly do not. That is a limitation of the data rather than a judgement about the walk.

No deadline you can fail

Challenges do not expire underneath you. You are walking a route, not racing a clock, and the Camino has been there for a thousand years.

Streak challenges are the exception, because a streak is by definition about consecutive weeks — but an empty current week does not break one. There are still days left in it.

Badges

Finishing a challenge earns a badge that sits on your profile. They are not currency and they do not unlock anything — they are a record that you did a specific hard thing.

Common questions

Can I do several challenges at once?

Yes, and most people do. Every ruck you log counts toward every challenge you are enrolled in that it qualifies for.

Do hand-entered rucks count toward challenges?

Yes, for distance. Elevation challenges need ascent data, which usually only comes from a device or a GPX track.

What happens when I finish the Camino?

You get the badge, and you can walk it again. The counter resets; the badge does not.

Is there a minimum pack weight?

A challenge counts any activity logged as a ruck, which means it has a pack weight above zero. If you want the challenge to mean something, that is between you and your rucksack.
