How fast should you ruck?
A useful pace is one you can hold without changing your gait. Use effort first, then learn what the clock means on flat ground, hills and event day.

The right rucking pace is the fastest pace you can walk with a normal, repeatable gait at the intended effort. For general training, that usually means conversational effort. A pace target comes later, when you are preparing for an event that actually has one.
Load, gradient, surface, heat and fatigue all change the cost of the same speed. That makes minutes per kilometre a result, not the primary control. Two people can do equally appropriate sessions at visibly different speeds.
Useful pace bands on flat ground

A tall walker on tarmac may stay conversational above 6 km/h. A shorter walker under the same load may need to overstride or shuffle to match it. The second person is not less fit for refusing the pace; they are protecting the movement they can repeat.
Use the talk test before the watch
At easy to moderate effort, you can speak a full sentence without pausing for breath. At a hard but controlled event effort, conversation breaks into short phrases. If you can only answer with single words, the session is no longer an ordinary aerobic ruck.
- Easy: nose breathing is comfortable and the pack never changes your step.
- Steady: breathing is clear but controlled; you could hold the effort for well over an hour.
- Hard: short phrases only, used deliberately for hills, intervals or a timed standard.
- Too fast for the day: you overstride, repeatedly shuffle, lose posture or cannot recover after a small rise.
Do not manufacture speed with stride length
A slightly quicker cadence and a natural step is usually cleaner than reaching farther in front. Overstriding under load increases braking at every footfall and is often the first visible sign that the target pace owns the walker rather than the other way round.
Why hills and trails break pace targets
Gradient raises metabolic cost quickly, while rough or soft terrain adds work that a distance split cannot see. Hold the intended effort uphill and accept the slower kilometre. On descents, shorten the step and keep the pack quiet rather than trying to win back every second.

How to get faster
First make the current distance and load boring. Then add short, controlled brisk sections on flat ground while the rest stays easy. A simple session is six repeats of three brisk minutes and three easy minutes. The brisk minutes must still look like walking.
Do not raise pack weight to train pace. More load teaches you to carry more load; it does not automatically teach efficient speed. Keep the event load fixed, practise the target rhythm in small doses, and let total time at pace accumulate over several weeks.
