Rucking uphill and on trails

Gradient and footing are training variables. Hold effort uphill, protect the descent, secure the pack, and add terrain without quietly adding everything else.

A hill is not merely a slower flat kilometre. Climbing raises metabolic cost and changes trunk movement; descending adds braking work; soft or uneven ground wastes energy and asks more of balance. Treat gradient and surface as load variables when you plan progression.

The first rule is to hold effort rather than road pace. Let speed fall on the climb, shorten the step, and arrive at the top able to regain rhythm without a long stop. A watch split cannot tell whether the kilometre rose 100 metres or crossed deep sand.

Climb by effort

Keep most training climbs at an effort where short sentences are still possible. Lean slightly from the ankles as the grade requires, keep the chest open and avoid folding at the waist beneath the pack. If the slope forces a shuffle, slow down rather than turning the climb into an unplanned loaded run.

Poles can improve stability and share some work on steep or technical routes, but they also occupy the hands and require practice. They are equipment for the route, not a cure for a load that is too heavy.

The descent is not free

Downhill walking can be cheaper metabolically than climbing while feeling harder on knees and quadriceps because the legs repeatedly brake the combined mass. Shorten the step, keep cadence controlled and resist leaning back against the pack. A loose load becomes most obvious when gravity starts throwing it forward and sideways.

Do not win back the clock downhill

A route average is not improved training if the descent is a series of overstriding catches. Protect foot placement and pack control; pace returns on ground where you can use it cleanly.

Pack differently for uneven ground

  • Compress every compartment so nothing gains momentum inside the bag.
  • Keep dense items close to the spine; slightly lower placement may feel more stable on highly technical ground than an extreme high load.
  • Balance side pockets and keep bottles retained when the pack tilts.
  • Put weather layers, food and navigation where a stop does not require unpacking the main load.
  • Use footwear already tested on the same surface, not merely the same distance.

Progress terrain as its own variable

Move from flat familiar ground to rolling paths, then sustained climbs, then technical terrain. Keep the pack and duration stable for the first exposure to each. Elevation gain belongs in the training record because five kilometres with 300 metres of climbing is not the same dose as five flat kilometres.

Common questions

Is rucking uphill better than flat rucking?

It is more demanding, not universally better. Hills are useful for event preparation and intensity, while flat ground makes load, pace and technique easier to control.

Should I reduce weight on trails?

Yes when footing or elevation is new. Hold the route or the load steady until you know the recovery cost rather than assuming road numbers transfer directly.

Why do descents hurt more than climbs?

Descending requires repeated braking under the combined body and pack mass. It can be metabolically easier while creating more local quadriceps and knee stress.

Do trekking poles help when rucking?

They can improve stability and share work on steep terrain, but only when practised. They do not compensate for unstable packing or excessive load.
